10 Things I Hate About You House: Then And Now

It’s been 20 years since the movie ’10 Things I Hate About You’ was released. Fans of the movie will most likely recognize the house that the Stratford sisters lived in with their overbearing father Walter (Larry Miller). The 10 Things I Hate About You house was central to many scenes throughout the movie, getting plenty of screen time.

The movie featured a large cast of promising young actors, including Heath Ledger (Patrick Verona), Julia Stiles (Kat Stratford), Larisa Oleynik (Bianca Stratford), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Cameron), Andrew Keegan (Joey) and Gabrielle Union (Chastity).

Some of the most memorable scenes at the house include Bianca’s overprotective father strapping a fake pregnancy belly to her stomach, Kat squealing in excitement over her Sarah Lawrence College acceptance letters, and the sisters heading out to prom.

THE HISTORY OF THE HOUSE

The property on 2715 North Junett Street, Tacoma, Washington was built in 1907. With views overlooking the Commencement Bay, this five-bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom Victorian home features a wrap-around porch and balcony with 3,910 square feet of living space.

The property was last sold in 2018 for $1.6 million, with the previous owners having lived there for 30 years.

THE HOUSE IN THE MOVIE

Those who remember 10 Things I Hate About You fondly will know much of the movie was shot either at the Stratford’s house or at the high school that Kat and Bianca attended. The high school happens to have been close by, the Stadium High School in Tacoma. While much of the movie was shot at the house, most of the filming took place in the large reception at the bottom of the staircase or out on the porch.

Below you will find a few shots from the movie, all of which take place by the staircase or in the living room. This includes the pregnancy bodysuit scene, where Bianca’s father forces her to wear the suit as a reminder that her actions have consequences.

THE 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU HOUSE TODAY

Twenty years on, the 10 Things I Hate About You house is still instantly recognizable. The wrap around porch and balcony, round windows and yellow-painted exterior still look almost exactly the same. The only noticeable difference being the new trees and plants scattered around the property.

While not much more of the house was seen in the movie, it’s well worth a look around some of the other rooms inside the house.

Upstairs you will find five bedrooms, however, it’s in the basement where this house really gets interesting…..

This bedroom has access to the balcony.

Down in the basement things get interesting, it has its very own bar!

Back outside you will find the wrap-around porch which Kat is sat on in the movie, as well as a single garage and carport.

Finally, eagle-eyed readers may have noticed there is a third floor in the attic. You can see from the photo below the attic has windows at both ends of the house. Unfortunately, the attic room has been left unfinished and it doesn’t appear that any photos of the room exist.
