A Look Back At The Forrest Gump House In Greenbow, Alabama

Fans of the 1994 box-office smash ‘Forrest Gump’ will likely recognize this house. The Forrest Gump house, which he (Tom Hanks) and his mama (Sally Field) lived in, is located in Greenbow, Alabama. This secluded old property, set in acres of land, with its long driveway and beautiful deep south countryside is the type of place anyone would want to live, right?

Wrong! Because it’s all a lie! There is no Greenbow, Alabama and there is no old house! In fact, none of the scenes were filmed in Alabama! The entire thing is one big LIE!…or incredible storytelling and movie sets, you decide.

The house, believe it or not, was actually built entirely for the movie on the Bluff Plantation, Yemasee, in South Carolina. Because the house wasn’t built to code, it had to be pulled down after filming had finished.

The Forrest Gump House In The Movie

Hard to believe that this was all a set, knocked up quickly, then torn down after filming the movie. Who wouldn’t want to live in a house like this?! Sure the decor would need updating, but the house itself looks beautiful.

Many popular scenes took place on the Bluff Plantation, including the ‘run Forrest run’ scene. Thankfully the driveway is still there today, so while you can’t see the house anymore, at least this little piece of movie history still exists.

The wedding of Forrest and Jenny (Robin Wright) also take place on the Bluff Plantation. In some shots, you can see the Combahee River that runs past the property.

Besides the town square scenes, which were filmed in Savannah, Georgia, most of the movie was actually shot in South Carolina, not Alabama. Even the Vietnam filming locations were in South Carolina on Fripp Island and Hunting Island State Park, off the Beaufort coast.

And for those wondering where the Forrest Gump bench is…the bench is now as the Savannah History Museum.

The original Forrest Gump bench can now be found at the Savannah Historical Museum.

While the Forrest Gump house may now be long gone, it’s nice to see the bench still exists.
