also known as &&num;8220&semi;Death Valley Scotty&comma;&&num;8221&semi; was a rather unsavory character&period; However&comma; the two men would strike up an unlikely friendship&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<h2 style&equals;"text-align&colon; who was from Kentucky&comma; had been a member of Buffalo Bill Cody&&num;8217&semi;s Wild West Show&period; He had been described as a con man&comma; ham actor&comma; roughneck&comma; pathological liar and all-round shady character&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Unsurprisingly&comma; the gold mine turned out to be non-existent&period; While this initially angered Johnson&comma; he was fascinated by the colourful Scott and the two men struck up an unlikely friendship&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>While spending time in the Death Valley area&comma; Johnson noticed his back felt much better in the warm and dry climate&period; Because of his health improvements&comma; he and his wife Bessie chose to build a vacation getaway home there&period; The home would become known as &&num;8216&semi;Scotty&&num;8217&semi;s Castle&&num;8217&semi;&comma; Johnson hired Martin de Dubovay as the architect&comma; Mat Roy Thompson as the engineer and Charles Alexander MacNeilledge as the designer&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Unknown to the Johnsons&comma; the initial survey was wrong&period; The land they had started building the property on was actually government land&period; The land they had bought was actually further up Grapevine Valley&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Construction came to a halt as they tried to resolve the mistake &lpar;the house was almost finished by now&rpar;&period; However&comma; before construction could resume the stock market crashed in 1929&period; This forced Albert Johnson&&num;8217&semi;s insurance company into bankruptcy&comma; making it difficult to finish the property&period; Having lost a considerable amount of cash&comma; the Johnsons used the unfinished property to produce an income by letting rooms out&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<div id&equals;"attachment&lowbar;903" style&equals;"width&colon; This tour gives you an insight into the technology that was used to construct this giant house in the middle of the desert&period; It will also show you the technology that the NPS is using to continue to maintain it to this day&period; That&&num;8217&semi;s 4x as much as the area would usually get in a year&excl;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>While the castle wasn&&num;8217&semi;t badly damaged&comma; the flash flooding destroyed the access road to the castle&period;
