The History Of This St Pancras Chambers Penthouse

St Pancras Chambers and St Pancras Renaissance London Hotel is the modern name for what was once the Midland Grand Hotel.

The Midland Grand Hotel was built by the Midland Railway Company in the 1870s to service those using the St Pancras railway station. The 150-bedroom hotel opened its doors to the public in 1873 and was in operation until 1935.

In 1935 the hotel closed and the building was used as railway offices until the 1980s. However, it wasn’t until 2004 that permission was granted for the building to be redeveloped into a new hotel.

The main public rooms of the Midland Grand were restored, the former taxi rank was converted into a lobby and a new bedroom wing was constructed. The newly redeveloped St Pancras Renaissance London Hotel contains 244 bedrooms, two bars, two restaurants, a ballroom, and twenty function rooms.

At the same time as the new hotel was redeveloped, the upper floors of the building were made into 68 luxurious apartments. The entire building opened its doors to the public on May 5th, 2011, exactly 138 years after its original opening.

St Pancras Chambers Penthouse

One of those 68 luxurious apartments at St Pancras Chambers is this incredible penthouse, which now occupies the space of the former water tower. The three-bedroom, five-bathroom penthouse features exposed Victorian beams, high ceilings, and incredible views across the London skyline.

To take advantage of the high ceilings in the property, this St Pancras Chambers Penthouse has a reverse layout, with the bedrooms on the bottom floor (fifth floor of the building) and open-plan living space at the top of the residence (the building’s seventh floor).

The open-plan living space allows for separate areas for dining, TV, lounging, and games. There are also two kitchens, a utility room, a plant room, a powder room, and a separate guest annex.

The sixth floor of the property (the middle of the three floors) is a stately entrance hall that is entered by a private lift. The entrance hall features a huge chandelier that hangs from the top of the top floor and hangs down through to the bottom floor. This floor also features two of the five bedrooms.

The owner of this St Pancras Chambers Penthouse also gets to benefit from all the amenities of the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, including a gym, swimming pool, and spa. Other features include 24-hour security and two parking spaces.

A St Pancras Chambers Penthouse doesn’t go on sale often, the last time one went on the market was in 2010 when the clock tower penthouse apartment sold for £2.1 million.

If you’ve read this far and you’re wondering where this St Pancras Chambers Penthouse featured in Harry Potter, the exterior features in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Harry and Ron fly past the penthouse windows in the flying Ford Anglia car.

Finally, another fun fact, the main stairwell in the hotel has featured on screen in both Christopher Nolan’s ‘Batman Begins‘ as well as the 1996 Spice Girls song ‘Wannabe’.
